Book Review: Can Love Happen Twice?

Although quite late, yet I could not resist to give my honest opinion of this book. "Can Love Happen Twice?" by Ravinder Singh is a sequel to his much successful work "I Too Had A Love Story". Lets shoot it straight, the book is bad.  The popular Indian Masala fiction, made popular by much revered Chetan Bhagat, sees its ultimate low in this book. The author seems self-obsessed and churns out quite a silly plot[if there is any, to say].

The author undermines the reading credentials of the youth when he comes out with a book like this. Ravinder's first book was quite alright and a fun read. So, to say, , it succeeded in what this section of books aim to achieve. But  after reading a sequel to it, the reader feels cheated. Yes, we read Chetan Bhagat but we are not as dumb as made out to be. How can you believe that the whole city would tune into a radio channel for more than five hours to listen to "Ravin's soul-touching tale of love and heart-break". Ravinder Singh redefines narcissism when he showers self-praise upon himself after every two or three pages. What is projected as "emotional rollercoaster ride" for the readers has already been seen in innumerable, good and bad, Bollywood movies.

There has mushroomed a breed of aspiring writers after the success of "Five Point Someone", some for the better and some for the worse. Chetan Bhagat, famously called "the Salman Khan of Indian Popular Fiction", should be made the universal benchmark for this genre. Therefore on scale of 1-10 on Bhagat meter, this book gets a hard-earned 4. Other writers like Durjoy Dutta, Preeti Shenoy fare much better than Ravinder Singh on the Bhagat meter as there books have some practical touch. Unlike, Ravinder's book which are set in his own Lala-land where he's the epitome of love. Lets move beyond the regular 4 friends, self-less love, intimate moments etc.

Ravinder Singh should ask the question to himself-"Can I write a readable book twice?". In a fairer world , the answer should be a No. Hope you get better the next time.
